This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture

Dr Max Price hosted a Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture on 14 August. The lecture was presented by Professor Vivek Chibber, from New York University, who spoke on “Eurocentrism, the academy and social emancipation”.

2. TB Davie Memorial Lecture

On Tuesday, 22 August 2017, the TB Davie Memorial lecture was presented by Professor Mahmood Mamdani, who spoke on “Decolonising the post-colonial university”.

3. VC’s response to allegations made against the UCT executive 

On Tuesday, 22 August, at the TB Davie Memorial Lecture, allegations of callousness and acting in bad faith by the University of Cape Town executive were made by a group of protesters. In a VC Desk, Dr Max Price wrote to the campus community in response to allegations regarding the performance bonuses of the executive and the working conditions of recently insourced workers.

4. VC’s faculty and departmental visits

Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price, together with the deputy vice-chancellors and the registrar, has initiated campus-wide engagements with staff in faculties and departments. These meetings serve as an opportunity to share thoughts on key issues and to engage on various matters affecting the university. The engagements will be taking place from August until October and will be scheduled in the mornings and afternoons. The first meetings took place when the VC met with staff in the Faculty of Science and the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT).

5. 2016: A Year in Review

As a snapshot of last year, 2016: A Year in Review presents a blend of excellence, uncertainty and robust debate. This annual publication, produced by UCT’s Newsroom and Publications unit, highlights the many achievements in teaching and research, introduces the players who brought the insourcing project to a close and celebrates the stories of exceptional students, staff and alumni.

6. PeopleSoft upgrades

Due to major infrastructure upgrades, PeopleSoft will not be available from Thursday, 24 August 2017, to Monday, 28 August 2017. 

7. Reapplications for 2018 student housing close on 31 August 2017

Current university students are reminded to reapply for 2018 student housing by 31 August 2017. All applications for returning student can be completed online.
