African composers in conversation

Africa Arts and UCT’s Institute for Creative Arts present a performance, followed by a discussion, with acclaimed African composers Tunde Jegede (Nigeria) and Bongani Ndodana-Breen (South Africa).

Both artists are internationally celebrated for their diverse repertoires, which include opera, symphonies and chamber music, melded with traditional African music forms.

Jegede, a master kora player, is well known for his blend of Western classical and African music.

He is well paired with Ndodana-Breen whose “delicately made music – airy, spacious, terribly complex but never convoluted – has a lot to teach the Western wizards of metric modulation and layered rhythms about grace and balance”, according to the New York Times.

The event takes place at 18:00 on 23 May at Hiddingh Hall. Entry is free and refreshments will be served from 17:30.
