Some employers have struggled to grasp the amendments to South Africa's labour law legislation in 2011, says Richard Burge.

The project manager of the UCT Law@Work Club explains that the organisation stepped in to ease some of the confusion and smooth workplace relations. This is achieved by having employers (from owners of small businesses to large corporate entities) subscribe to an online forum where they can interact with peers and receive customised advice from a resident attorney.

The "club coach", as Burge describes labour law expert Andrew Breetzke, provides tailor-made insight for a fraction of the cost of a typical legal consultation.

"We provide a trustworthy, reliable source of information about labour law to people that can't afford a lawyer," Burge summarises.

At the time of going to print, the UCT Law@Work Club serviced 110 clients, from a small factory owner in Port Shepstone to household brands in Cape Town.
