The UCT flag will fly at half-mast on middle campus near Bremner building this week, following a call by President Jacob Zuma to mark last week's tragedy at the Lonmin Mine in North West, which ended in over 40 deaths, with a national week of mourning.

"Whatever the wrongs and rights of what happened, the events at the mine affect not only the deceased, the injured and their families, but is a matter of national concern," said Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price in a message to staff yesterday. "As a university it is incumbent on us to contribute to a deeper understanding of the causes of this and similar incidents, and to help find solutions."

Forty-four people were killed during a strike at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine.
