SHAWCO appeals for help

The Students' Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO), a UCT-based non profit organization, has embarked on a campaign to raise funds for its education outreach programmes. The organisation hopes to raise between R500 000 to R1 million to keeps its programmes going in 2011.

SHAWCO's education sector offers tutoring projects in a wide range of academic and non academic areas to learners across the Cape Metropolitan area through its fun and interactive curriculum. "We create a safe learning space in which children feel comfortable asking questions, engaging with the learning experience, and developing a love of learning," SHAWCO's Eltena Dirks said. In 2010, over 1 500 learners from 30 different schools took part in the programmes.

SHAWCO is appealing to staff, parents, alumni, entrepreneurs and the general public to donate funds and help them equip learners with life-long skills and improve their access to further education.
