UCT joins protest for libraries

05 October 2009

UCT's Centre for Information Literacy joined thousands of learners from Cape Town recently to march against the lack of libraries at Khayelitsha schools. Called the Schools Libraries Campaign, the march was organised by the NGO Equal Education (EE), and saw learners, teachers, librarians, authors and activists walking from Salt River High School to the City Hall, following the same route of the historic 1976 student march. The campaign's demand, "One School, One Library, One Librarian", is based on EE research that found that there are fewer than five functional libraries among Khayelitsha's 53 public schools. The organisation argues that well-resourced and well-run school libraries are essential for quality education.
