May we have some more: UCT Employees' Union members at a peaceful protest outside Bremner. They voiced dissatisfaction with management's 7% salary increase offer for 2009.

About 100 members of the UCT Employees' Union (EU) staged a peaceful afternoon protest outside the Bremner Building on Wednesday, voicing dissatisfaction with management's offer of a 7% salary increase next year.

Though many Muslim and Jewish members were celebrating religious festivals last week, the protest was called at short notice to coincide with the monthly Council meeting.

This was intended to make Council aware that proper provision needs to be made in the budget for increases, said Yasmin Fazel-Ellahi of the EU executive.

"The message was loud and clear," she wrote in an email to members afterwards.

EU members will be kept informed as negotiations progress.
