UCT has recently opened its new gym on Lower Campus

It didn't take long for students to find their way to the new UCT gym/health centre, which opened its doors on lower campus this week, not even a hop and a skip from Graça Machel Hall residence.

The first thing anyone who's ever used the erstwhile weights room in the Sports Centre will notice is that there's a lot more elbow room in the new venue, even though some 800 students have already signed up for the club.

"It is very impressive," commented Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Thandabantu Nhlapo. "And let us hope that it means a healthier student body, if you'll pardon the pun."

Work on the centre is not quite wrapped up just yet, though. The aerobics area will hopefully be done and dusted in the next few weeks, while the revamped pool is expected to be good to go in the second semester.

The gym is open weekdays between 06h00-21h00 and between 08h00-19h00 over weekends, during term times, with floor instructors on hand to give words of advice and encouragement.
