Second ceremonies for Commerce and Humanities

Honour: Last night Lord Steyn, retired senior member of the Judicial Committee of Lords, received an honorary Doctorate of Law, recognising his contributions to the field.

Today sees the second graduation ceremonies for the large Humanities and Hommerce faculties, the former held this morning at 10h00 and the latter this afternoon at 15h00.

At this ceremony the Commerce faculty will award diplomas, certificates and postgraduate degrees.

At this morning's ceremony Professor Jane Bennett of the African Gender Institute received her Distinguished Teacher Award, announced earlier this year. Bennett has 27 years' teaching experience.

At the Commerce and Law graduation ceremony yesterday afternoon, Lord Steyn, the retired senior member of the Judicial Committee of Lords, received an honorary Doctorate of Law, recognising his contributions to the field.

Lord Steyn is a member of the British House of Lords.

A collection of his judgments and public lectures has been recently published under the title Democracy Through Law: Selected Speeches and Judgments.

His clear public voice on wider issues of constitutional law and human rights has marked him as an exceptional legal figure.
