Lord Steyn honoured

Lord Steyn will be the centre of attention as the graduation week enters its third day.

The retiring senior member of the Judicial Committee of Lords will be conferred an honorary doctorate, Doctor in Law honoris causa, in Jameson Hall this afternoon.

Steyn is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, a Rhodes University scholar and a graduate of the University College, Oxford, who served as a senior member of the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords for many years.

Also today, Professor Jonathan Burchell, head of the Department Criminal Justice in the Faculty of Law, will be welcomed as a UCT fellow, while Francis Carter, a senior lecturer at the School of Architecture and Planning, will receive a Distinguished Teacher Award.

Wednesday will also see graduation ceremonies of the faculties of engineering & the built environment, science and commerce.
