Win some, lose some

First seeded: Fabian Raddatz anticipates a hit.

A nailbiting final in the UCT Badminton Open, held at the Sports Centre on 3 to 4 March, saw UCT's first-seeded Fabian Raddatz triumph over Grant Gartshore of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Raddatz rallied after losing the first game and took the match 22-24, 21-17 and 21-17, in so doing becoming the first UCT student to win the event since its relaunch in 2002.

Some other UCT teams didn't do too badly, either.

Michelle Cluver and Jingxi Zhang made it to the semi-finals of the women's doubles competition, as did third-seeded UCT students Raddatz and Steve Kuo. The pair, unfortunately, lost to the second-seeded Gartshore brothers, Shaun (UCT) and Grant (CPUT).
