Historians out and about

03 September 2003

Historians on tour: the Department of Historical Studies celebrated its centenary with a special colloquium entitled The Future of the Past in Africa: Writing and Teaching History in Africa in the 21st Century. As part of the celebrations, visitors attending the colloquium were taken a tour of historical sites close to Cape Town, one to the West Coast, where they viewed the excavated remains of an old Dutch East India Company outpost on the Langebaan lagoon, and also to the Prestwich Place burial ground in Green Point. Among those who attended the colloquium were Shula Marks, who holds an honorary doctorate from UCT where she studied history, as well as Nigerian historian Toyin Falola, now based in Texas.
