Staff, students in anti-war protest

22 April 2003
About 80 UCT staff members and students recently added their voices to the growing anti-war sentiments currently sweeping the globe. Chanting slogans like, "Bush, Bush we know you, your father is a killer too" and "Who let the bombs out, Bush, Bush, Bush", the marchers brandished anti-war placards while walking peacefully down University Avenue. According to Roger Arendse, spokesperson for the organisers of the action, this was a spontaneous initiative by members of the UCT community, including representatives of all staff bodies as well as the SRC. "An important aim was to voice our opposition to the ongoing war in Iraq and to engage critically with the issues surrounding the war," he said. Members of the UCT community who support the initiative but were unable to attend the march are encouraged to add their names to the anti-war statement that was read out. They should contact Vicky Scholtz at 650-4083 or Vicki@humanities.uct.ac.za.
