Waiting for Gary

ANOTHER UCT alumnus who will have much to do with the Proteas' success in the Cricket World Cup is opening batsman, Gary Kirsten.

Until late last year, Kirsten, who worked on a Higher Diploma in Education and a BA degree at UCT from 1986 to 1988, seemed to be out of contention for both the Proteas test and ODI sides – and an unlikely candidate for the CWC squad - until unexpected call-ups against Bangladesh (tests) and Pakistan (ODIs) came along. He pounced on the opportunities, scoring tons in both formats of the game.

Kirsten is also South Africa's top scorer in the CWC thus far, notching up 69 against the West Indies and 52 not out in the match against Kenya.

Monday Paper has assiduously been trying to get hold of Kirsten for a short interview, but has had little luck thus far. Watch this space, however, as we promise to waylay him sometime during the tournament.
