I am thrilled that you have chosen to begin your university journey with us. Whether you grew up seeing Table Mountain regularly, or are arriving in Cape Town for the very first time, you are stepping into a community that celebrates curiosity, diversity and creativity.

Starting university is exciting – and yes, a little overwhelming too. But here’s the good news: you’re not doing this alone – your lecturers, tutors, UCT advisors, residence teams and support staff are all here to help you find your rhythm and thrive.

Your UCT experience doesn’t start and end in the classroom. From day one, you can dive into campus life by joining one of more than 100 student societies – a great way to meet people, discover new interests and find your place at UCT.

Love sport, fitness or trying something new? UCT has produced students who’ve competed on global stages; and last year, UCT’s senior rugby team, Ikey Tigers, clinched the prestigious Varsity Cup title. We offer nearly 40 sports clubs, gyms and fitness facilities, plus creative and leadership opportunities across campus. Whether you’re competing, creating, leading or just giving something a go, getting involved is one of the best ways to make friends, build confidence and make your life on campus unforgettable. As you step into this new chapter, here are a few thoughts to carry with you:

• Be curious: Ask questions. Explore widely. Challenge yourself.
• Be open to growth.
• Be kind to yourself.
• Balance work with rest and care.
• Seek help early: If you ever feel uncertain, overwhelmed or stuck, reach out. UCT’s Student Wellness Service and the 24/7 UCT Student Careline are here for you. Support is part of your journey – not a sign that you’re falling behind.
• Get involved: Join a society. Try a new sport. Volunteer. Start something. Cape Town and UCT offer endless opportunities to explore your passions, build your network and create memories that last a lifetime.
