The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research (CeBER) has devised a unique and innovative project that breaks down waste and converts it to an energy source for cooking or to produce water that can later be used to irrigate on-campus vegetable gardens.

UCT’s d-school Afrika reaffirms leadership with second 6-Star Green Star rating
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika has once again achieved a 6-Star Green Star rating, this time the as-built rating from the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). This second 6-Star rating, following the d-school Afrika’s initial recognition in 2023 for the design rating, reaffirms UCT’s sustained commitment to environmental sustainability.

Researchers decode oldest DNA from South Africa to date
A team of researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany has analysed human remains from the Oakhurst rock shelter in southernmost Africa and reconstructed the genomes of 13 individuals, who died between 1 300 and 10 000 years ago, including the oldest human genome from South Africa to date.
