Intestinal worm infections increases severity of STIs in females — research finds
New research has found that intestinal worm infections may put sub-Saharan Africa women at increased risk of sexually transmitted viral infections (STIs). The findings were published this week in the Cell Host and Microbe journal.

Antibiotic resistance - ‘a faceless pandemic’, UCT scientist warns
The rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria in South Africa and across the globe is driven by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans and food-producing animals, and poses a huge threat to modern medicine, warns University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Professor Marc Mendelson, head of the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital.

A blood test to find those at high risk of tuberculosis in people living with HIV
A new study has reported findings of a host blood test that can find those at high risk of tuberculosis (TB) in people living with HIV. The blood mRNA biomarker differentiated between people living with HIV who had active TB from those without TB and predicted which individuals would develop TB within 15 months.

Response to the Sunday Independent’s article on the passing of a student
An article in The Sunday Independent (“Emergency council meeting as UCT crisis deepens”, 12 April 2021) attempts to draw a connection between the tragedy of a student’s death in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and a series of recent, unrelated events at the executive level of the University of Cape Town (UCT). In effect, a personal tragedy was hijacked to present a distorted view of the wider management landscape at UCT.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) Libraries, in collaboration with the Department of African Languages and Literatures will have a virtual book launch of Dikeledi ha di wele fatshe (loosely translated means, tears do not fall in vain) authored by Dr Rethabile Possa-Mogoera on 15 April 17:00 to 18:00 via MS Teams.

UCT’s first-ever Google Research Scholars Program recipients
Associate Professor Amir Patel and Dr Mohohlo Tsoeu, both from the University of Cape Town’s Department of Electrical Engineering and its newly formed African Robotics Unit , have become the institution’s first-ever recipients of search engine giant Google’s Research Scholar Program. They are also the only Africans in the Program’s 2021 cohort .

Systematic bias found in prominent “fair share” assessments of global climate action
In a new perspective, leading climate social scientists argue that influential studies that attempt to quantify different countries’ “fair share” of climate action are presented as ‘neutral’ but convey unreflected and unintentional bias. Reducing equity to derivative benchmarks is an oversimplified view of what is primarily a political and ethical discussion.

Bongani Mayosi medical prize winner vows to lift others as she rises
University of Cape Town (UCT) alumnus Dr Peace Francis has won the 2020 Bongani Mayosi Medical Students Academic Prize. The prestigious national award recognises final-year medical students who epitomise the leadership qualities and values of the late UCT Dean of Health Sciences, Professor Bongani Mayosi. Among these is the saying “Lift as you rise”.

Study details first description of white sharks interacting with seals at Langebaanweg
A new study recently published in the South African Journal of Science has found that white sharks began feeding on seal carcasses five million years ago at Langebaanweg. This is also the first description of white sharks feeding on seals from South Africa’s geological past .
