UCT Radio’s Rebecca Cullum was among the finalists at this year’s Liberty Radio Awards – the only industry-wide awards in the South African radio industry – which were hosted as part of a gala banquet in Sandton on 13 April.

The awards are held each year to recognise the best of the best in the industry – from in-front-of-the mic presenters to behind-the-scenes producers – and set a benchmark for all radio stations and radio professionals.

UCT Radio was nominated in the top five finalists in the following categories: Best Campus Breakfast Show, Best Campus News Bulletin Reader and Best Campus Station.

While UCT radio breakfast shows the Morning Sole and Weekend Breakfast were ultimately pushed out by the winning University of Pretoria Tuks FM Breakfast Show, Cullum took the top spot in her category as Best Campus News Bulletin Reader.

“The award was five years in the making,” she said.

“I am very grateful to those who have trained and guided me along the way. The award means more than anyone could expect. I am still in that delightful state of mind of not knowing what I want to do after my degree, so it definitely is giving me the push I need to continue in the broadcasting industry as a career.”
