UCT’s Ikey Tigers met the Maties of Stellenbosch University (SU) for a night of rugby rivalry in a Varsity Cup match that marked the centenaries of both institutions.
Over the past 107 years, the fierce rivals have competed in a total of 105 games, of which Maties won 70, Ikeys won 19 and 16 were drawn. The teams were first matched up in 1911 – as the South African College and the Victoria College – seven years before both universities were officially established on 2 April 1918.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price cut a birthday cake together with Professor Wim de Villiers, SU rector and vice-chancellor, during half-time to commemorate the moment.
The Maties went on to claim victory over their rivals, beating the Ikeys 33–14.
