UCT community to march for slain medical student

Benny Moqobane In memory: Pakiso Benny Moqobane.

It's both ironic and poignant that Pakiso Benny Moqobane's fellow medical students have suggested singing Michael Jackson's Heal the World tomorrow (2 October) when they march to 'claim back the streets of Obz'.

Moqobane, a first-year medical student, was shot twice in the head in a drive-by shooting on Monday night in what still appears to be a crime without motive. He had been walking with a friend in William Road.

The Faculty of Health Sciences has arranged the march in Moqobane's memory and as a protest against crime. Flowers will be laid at the scene.

All are welcome to join the march, which takes place at 11h45, leaving from the Barnard Fuller parking area on campus in Anzio Road at noon. From there the procession will turn right into Falmouth Road, to the end, and then left into George Street and left into William Road, where a tribute will be delivered.

From there the procession will turn right into Penzance Road and then left into the Main Road, where it will proceed past the shopping centre, before turning left into Groote Schuur Drive and back around to Anzio Road.

Those who have white laboratory coats or academic gowns are urged to wear these.
