Outreach training for nurses

The Lung Institute's Knowledge Translation Unit has launched a documentary and a website on their PALSA PLUS programme to coincide with the 38th World Conference on Lung Health, held in Cape Town in November.

The PALSA PLUS programme, recently announced as a national programme, combines locally adapted guidelines with an outreach-training programme for primary care nurses, and has been implemented in the Free State and Western Cape provinces.

According to the head of the unit, Dr Lara Fairall, the programme adopts an evidence-based approach to in-service training, equipping Department of Health nurse managers as outreach trainers, who in turn use concise, easy-to-use guidelines and training materials to train on-site at clinics.

She said research shows that it improves quality of care for TB, HIV/AIDS and respiratory diseases.

"We felt that written descriptions were not able to effectively communicate our unique programme, hence the film," Fairall said.
