Awards abound for student leaders

Sterling track record: SRC president Zukiswa Mqolomba receives the Vice-Chancellor's Student Leader Award from Professor Njabulo S Ndebele.

Student Representative Coucil president, Zukiswa Mqolomba, walked off with the coveted Vice-Chancellor's Student Leader Award at last night's 2007 UCT Caltex Student Leadership Awards in the Jameson Hall.

A highlight of the student calendar, the annual awards function honours students' extra-curricular activities in a range of areas, including their work in societies, student councils and residences.

The following awards were also presented on the night:

  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor's Student Leader Award: David Watson
  • Executive Director: Department of Student Affairs' Student Leader Award: Lusand Gwayi and Nadia Oshry
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Media: Murray Hunter
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Residence: Nadia Oshry
  • Most Outstanding Student leader in Societies and Organisations: Steve Kenyon
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Community Service: Garikai Nyaruwata
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Sports: Fraser MacDonald
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Undergraduate Student Faculty Councils: Portia Gama and Nicholus Makofane
  • Most Outstanding Student Leader in Postgraduate Student Faculty Councils: Lehlohonolo Pule Hlahane

In addition, three students won prestigious scholarships. The Dwane Martin Memorial Scholarship was made to Vincent Chambati, the Sir Richard Luyt Memorial Scholarship to Garikai Nyaruwata, and Tapiwa Tevera received the Ackerman Family Foundation Award.

The Students' Representative Council also announced a special award to Steve Biko. This will be presented to the Biko family at a later stage.
