Letter: Reckless Driving of Jammie Shuttles by Richard Hill
04 June 2007At UCT we have a great public transport system, the Jammie Shuttle. The driving of the buses, however, often leaves much to be desired.
Some of the drivers I have observed:
- fail to use indicators
- travel at excessive speed, both on and off campus - the campus speed limit is 40 km/hr
- hog the road by driving over the central white line.
On a positive note, the Shuttle driver who recently took my students on a field trip to the Berg River Dam was excellent and inspired confidence with his style of defensive driving.
Individually, we can address the malaise that afflicts our roads by being more accommodating of each other, myself included. As an institution, I wonder if we are doing enough to train the Jammie Shuttle drivers. They would surely benefit from attending advanced driving courses.
