21 May 2007

The School of Economics is still reeling after the sudden death of a talented master's student, Matthew Breier, who died of leukaemia on 8 May.

Professor Johan Fedderke, director of economics at UCT, said he learnt of the news "with great sadness".

Breier had completed his honours degree with distinction in 2004, and won the ABSA Bank prize for the country's best honours dissertation from the Economic Society of South Africa.

He was in the second year of his master's degree. He had also completed the Two Oceans marathon on the Easter weekend, winning a bronze medal.
