Update on developments on campus

17 February 2023

Dear colleagues and students

As announced in the communication issued on the evening of Thursday, 16 February 2023, the University of Cape Town (UCT) management was of the understanding that the university would be in a position to resume face-to-face teaching and learning, and research programmes, with effect from this morning, Friday, 17 February 2023.

Regrettably this has proven not possible given the unfortunate actions of some protesting students this morning.

The UCT management has had engagements with the SRC, the most recent of which was on 16 February. At this engagement, management showed what has been done through the various extensive measures, to deal with the fee block issues raised.

It is management’s view that all reasonably possible measures have been put in place to address the issues, hence a decision was taken to return to face-to-face campus activities.

Having avoided the undesirable situation of dealing with the protests of this week through legal means, the executive has made it clear that there would be no choice left but to go the legal route should there be any further unlawful acts. The executive therefore wishes to assure the campus community that action will be taken to deal with any unlawful acts.
