In remembrance: Anthony Glenn von Zeil

17 April 2024

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our colleague Mr Anthony Glenn von Zeil (59). He passed away on Friday, 5 April 2024 due to illness.

Mr Von Zeil’s journey at UCT started as a student, where he held student leadership positions in the 1980s. He later became a staff member, holding the role of manager of Student Housing in 1990 before being appointed as a warden in 1995. He served as warden until his passing.

His colleagues said Mr Von Zeil’s passion for student and staff development and support, as well as his attention to detail, were the cornerstone of the residence system. They said his authenticity and steadfast support built and maintained numerous relationships within UCT over the years, while his leadership and advocacy created development opportunities for many.

Colleagues described his focus during residence operational peaks as “the devil is in the detail”, balanced with support and compassion. He will be missed for his generosity, deep conversations, and empathy.

He is survived by his father Louis, mother Glenda, daughter Alice, sister Caron, nephew Joshua and niece Zahara.

The family has held a private funeral. The Student Housing and Residence Life department will host a memorial service on Thursday, 18 April 2024 at 11:00 in Rochester House hall.

The university has offered Mr Von Zeil’s family support in this period of bereavement. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew Mr Von Zeil.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
