Computer boffs off to Poland
UCT students Timothy Stranex and Migael Strydom are part of a four-man team that will take part in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Poland in August. The team will compete against young people from 80 other countries for gold, silver and bronze in computer programming. The Standard Bank/CSSA Computer Olympiad, which serves as the selection vehicle for the team, invites participants from all high schools in South Africa. The four team members and the two reserves made it through the four-stage selection process, which started in April 2004 with 13 000 participants in the first round. Stranex matriculated at Crawford College, Durban, and is studying computer engineering at UCT. He is also studying Japanese. Strydom was a grade 12 learner at Pretoria Boys' High when he entered the competition. He is now a computer science student at UCT, and balances his academic interests with cross-country running. Team leader will be computer science lecturer Donald Cook, who has been accompanying teams since 1996. Deputy team leaders are UCT master's students Bruce Merry and Carl Hultquist, both past multiple-medal winners at the IOI.
Nocturnes exhibition at UCT Irma Stern Museum
The city and harbour of Cape Town at night are the predominant focus of landscape painter Mary Visser's latest exhibition Nocturnes at the UCT Irma Stern Museum until June 11. Ranging from naturalistic charcoal drawings to large-scale abstracted oils, Visser is known for her varied use of media and changing stylistic approach to subjects that include harbours, city streets and farmlands. In her night scenes, Visser seeks to create an equivalent for her experience of the mystery of familiar landscapes. The UCT Irma Stern Museum, situated in Cecil Rd, Rosebank, is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10h00 until 17h00. For further details tel 685 5686.
