Some of the initiatives at UCT which affirm our commitment to the African continent include:

  • The University Science, Humanities and Engineering Partnerships in Africa (USHEPiA) programme, a consortium of eight African universities (including UCT), enables staff from partner universities to obtain postgraduate degrees from UCT.
  • USHEPiA's objective is to generate and disseminate knowledge, and to build human and institutional capacity in African universities.
  • Researchers at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM) are conducting research that addresses Africa's most pressing health problems, including HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB.
The Centre for African Studies teaches a range of multi-disciplinary courses dealing with the contemporary political, social and material context of Africa.
  • The African Gender Institute develops theoretical and practical understandings of gender and its importance in the process of social transformation in Africa.
  • UCT is actively involved in developing higher education policy through the Association of African Universities (AAU).This includes a project between the AAU, the South African Universities Vice-Chancellors Association (SAUVCA) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) to revive higher education in Africa.
  • UCT's research and work on genetically modified foods in the African context is internationally acclaimed.
