UCT striker Zizipho Mmango and defender Nina Wiik helped the Western Cape side to victory at the recent SASSU interprovincial soccer tournament.
In its three round robin games, the Western Cape outfit (made up of players from the different university and technikon teams in the province) had outscored North-West Province 3-1, lost 0-2 to Free State and routed the hapless Mpumalanga by 22-0. In the semifinal against Gauteng, the sides were level 1-1 after extra-time, but the Cape Town women kept their heads to win the penalty shootout 4-2. The side then beat KwaZulu-Natal 3-0 in the final.
Mmango and Wiik don their UCT numbers again this week for the second round of another SASSU event - the Western Cape games where the university and technikon sides battle for the right to represent the province at a national championship later this year. UCT was the pick of the Western Cape sides last year.
