The singing phantom comes to town

17 February 2004

Just a year and a bit after his Cats hit the boards in Cape Town, another of Andrew Lloyd's Webber's famed rock opera, Phantom of the Opera, is due to come to the city in April.

Tickets will likely be hard to come by, but thankfully, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) will be hosting a show on April 7 at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town. The Institute is selling tickets for the staging, with proceeds going towards the Ziphelele Mbambo Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Aimed at encouraging students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue postgraduate studies in exercise science and biokinetics, the scholarship was recently established by UCT in memory of Ziphelele Mbambo.

Mbambo was a promising postgraduate student and was about to embark on his PhD in exercise science when he was killed in a car hijacking in 1999.

Successful candidates will, in addition to the scholarship, be offered the opportunity to become involved in work at the SSISA during their studies. Candidates will be offered a one-year internship at the institute on completion of their studies.
