Campus announcement

26 May 2017

Dear colleagues and students

I am saddened to have to tell you of the recent death of another student. Ms Morakane Matji, a second-year social sciences student in the Faculty of Humanities, died at her private residence off campus on 18 May. She was 20 years old.

The cause and exact circumstances of her death have not officially been established. An investigation by the South African Police Service is ongoing. The announcement of this tragedy was delayed while we engaged with the family and in line with their request. We continue to offer support to them.

People who knew Ms Matji in the Department of Social Sciences have spoken of her joyful character. They said she was known as a friendly and approachable person who loved to smile, who was passionate about the courses she studied and was always an enthusiastic and active participant in her class discussions. They have spoken of her inquisitiveness, eagerness to learn and active participation in tutorials.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, 27 May, at 09:00 at the Doxa Deo Gemeente church on the corner of Atterbury Road and Olympus Drive in Pretoria.

On behalf of the UCT community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Ms Matji’s family and friends.

Sincerely

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
