From discovery to impact: UCT showcase reimagines the postdoctoral journey

From rethinking plant variety protection for African agriculture, to mixed method research into disability inclusive sport and the re-programming of the lung to defeat Tuberculosis, Postdoctoral research fellows (postdocs) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) are working on solutions to some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Postdocs provide an important bridge between academic discovery and real-world application; a role proudly displayed at the UCT Postdoc Research Showcase held on 13 July 2026. Hosted by the UCT Postdoctoral Association (PDA) in collaboration with the Researcher Development Academy (RDA), this hybrid event offered a valuable opportunity for fellows, principal investigators (PIs), mentors and industry sponsors to highlight research with immediate, tangible impacts and explore potential collaborations.

Shape a field, mentor others, build a university

A central theme of the event was a redefinition of the postdoctoral identity. Some of the most advanced work in universities is driven by talented and promising postdoc researchers who are central to innovation pipelines – yet they often remain largely out of public view. Representing the RDA, Dr Thierry Luescher, Director: Postgraduate Studies and Researcher Development, acknowledged that this stage can be profoundly precarious.

“The postdoctoral journey is a transitional and transformative bridge between doctoral study and independent scholarship,” he said. And while mentorship and intellectual independence are the primary currencies of this academic stage, the modern postdoc must also “navigate the complexities around cultural and social capital, relationship-building, community engagement and societal impact that also needs to be built”.

Moving beyond the traditional view of the postdoctoral phase as a "waiting room," the proceedings highlighted a new institutional focus on overcoming precarity through professional development, interdisciplinary collaboration and context-conscious research. This shift also involves a move away from seeing publications as the only "currency" of academic life, Dr Luescher said. UCT, through the RDA, is actively emphasising a broader economy of success that includes grant writing, teaching, mentorship and ethical societal engagement.

Research presentations on the day illustrated these themes through an array of diverse lenses, from Ubuntu personalism in philosophy and the conservation of African biodiversity, to the development of personalised medical technologies and the protection of local industries like beekeeping and agrifood systems.

Bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact

One of the morning’s presenters was Dr Samira Gholizadeh, whose research focuses on using innovative manufacturing technologies to improve patient-specific care and healthcare outcomes. Based in the Division of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Human Biology, she is studying the development of advanced biomaterials and support of innovation in precision medical devices. Her work focuses on Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), ensuring that critical medical devices like stents and implants are safe and reliable under physiological conditions.

“I am motivated by the opportunity to translate engineering research into healthcare solutions that make a meaningful difference in people's lives,” Dr Gholizadeh said. Her postdoctoral experience at UCT has provided her the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment where engineering research is translated into healthcare innovation. “It’s both scientifically exciting and socially impactful,” she said. “The future is not only printing implants, but engineering safer, smarter, personalised and more intelligent medical devices that improve patient outcomes and quality of life.”

The best poster winner at the showcase was Dr Janaïs Delport, a postdoc in the Department of Biological Science and Chemistry, whose research focuses on identifying the characteristic features of authentic honeys produced in the Greater Cape Floristic region.

“Unfortunately, honey is one of the most targeted foods for falsification and fraud,” she said. “The chemical, physical and microscopical markers identified in my research can be used to differentiate our authentic honeys from fake products, empowering law enforcement to remove the latter from our markets.”

The need for honey research in South Africa led to scientists establishing Melimetric – a research group at UCT dedicated to studying the qualities that define honey. The group use analytical services that not would otherwise be practically accessible, providing them to the Southern African community.

"Occasionally consumers misunderstand what the label on a honey means. The natural colour, flavour, aroma and medicinal properties of honey are strongly influenced by the nectar or other plant secretions the honey bees foraged from,” she explained.

“The markers identified in my postdoctoral research will allow us to offer a greater diversity of analytical tests to the industry, thus offering more protection against fake products and the opportunity to promote the quality and uniqueness of authentic South African honeys.”

The rise of the interdisciplinary scholar

In his guest speaker presentation, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, Professor Thokozani Majozi, emphasised that modern challenges in energy, water and artificial intelligence (AI) are not "stratified across disciplinary lines" and require collective understanding. He noted that the rich diversity of research presented at the showcase demonstrated a growing culture where researchers must speak across fields.

This corroborated Luescher’s observations that the ability to maintain "disciplinary depth" while communicating to different audiences is a critical skill for the modern researcher. He explained that the showcase itself is a valuable training ground, challenging this cohort to master their research interest "elevator pitch" and practice communicating complex findings and exciting discoveries and datasets to everyone; including non-academics.

Building a resilient future

While discussions initially focused on the evolving role of postdoctoral researchers, the strongest evidence of their value came from the research on display throughout the day. The work presented highlighted the breadth of expertise and impact embodied by the university's postdoctoral community.

The event concluded with a call for UCT to position postdocs as the "cutting edge" of research efforts, aimed not only at supporting the individual researcher’s career transition but also positioning the region as a global leader in clean energy and innovation. Professor Majozi emphasised the university's investment in the "right skills for the future," including green chemistry, data analytics and circular economic design.

Postdoctoral fellows play an increasingly important role in UCT's research ecosystem. As highly skilled researchers who drive innovation, mentor emerging scholars and contribute significantly to research outputs, they are a vital cohort in advancing the university's strategic research ambitions.

Ultimately, the event framed the postdoctoral experience not merely as a period of individual research, but as a vital contribution to an intellectual ecosystem designed to build robust African institutions and solve real-world challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.
