Umthombo: new edition out now

The second issue of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) research magazine Umthombo was launched by Professor Michael Kyobe, acting deputy vice-chancellor for research and internationalisation, at the university’s annual research function last week. The function, hosted by the UCT Research Office, is a celebration of the year’s research achievements and the people behind those successes.
The latest edition of Umthombo features a multi-part story on the African Centre for Cities: a laboratory for urban thinking that has gained a global reputation as one of the leading knowledge centres for urban crises, particularly on the African continent. The relationship between UCT and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) also features, as well as the Weddell Sea expedition.
Umthombo, which will be produced two or three times a year, aims to showcase the breadth and depth of UCT’s research, primarily for an international audience.
The Research Office also launched Research and Innovation Highlights 2017-18, a digital publication recognising some of the noteworthy research achievements of the past year.
The highlights in this year’s report cover 20 research and innovation achievements. Among them are the most recent recipient of the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award, Professor Mark Solms; Professor Musa Mhlanga, who has been awarded funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for research to map all the cells in the human body; and Professor Renee Kraan-Korteweg’s recognition at the South African Women in Science Awards.
