Fuller Hall women’s residence will mark its 90th anniversary this weekend.

The Fuller Hall community of women students and alumni is preparing to mark the residence’s 90th anniversary on Saturday, 11 August. One of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) oldest residences, Fuller Hall was established in 1928, but named only in 1950.

The residence was named after Maria Emmeline Barnard Fuller, one of the first four women to enrol at UCT in 1887. Fuller, later a member of the South African College / UCT Council, was known as a “doughty fighter for the rights of women”.

The celebration will begin at 11:30. Former Fullerite Dr Hannah-Reeve Sanders, of the medical class of 1952 and former CEO of Groote Schuur Hospital, will attend, along with other distinguished alumni and students.

The oldest known living alumnus is 102-year-old Georgina Harwood. Harwood, who enrolled at UCT in 1931 before her 16th birthday, famously celebrated her centenary by skydiving. She was guest speaker at Fuller’s 87th anniversary in 2015.
