Paul Weinberg’s Traces and Tracks book launch

Traces and Tracks is the result of a 30-year journey that photographer Paul Weinberg has undertaken with the San of southern Africa.
Weinberg had studied the San at university and was interested in their unique relationship with nature, survival skills and hunter-gatherer existence. His first encounter with these communities was in 1984, where he observed signs of a society grappling to hold on to their land, way of life, culture and values.
The conversion of a people’s way of life, from being dependent on the land to receiving cash wages from the South African army, presented sad and traumatic scenes. Weinberg spent the next three decades travelling to communities in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia to document the lives of the modern San and share their stories.
Traces and Tracks is shaped by many of the video interviews and photographs he took from his trips in 2013 and 2014 where he ran workshops for young emergent San storytellers.
The book will be launched on Thursday, 11 May at 18:30 at the David Krut Projects and Bookstores at the Montebello Design Centre, Newlands. Weinberg will be in discussion with author and visual anthropology lecturer Kharnita Mohamed.
