The SSISA/UCT 10km Memorial Run takes place on 7 May 2017

05 May 2017

The UCT community has been invited to sign up for the 10km Memorial Run hosted jointly by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and UCT.

The first race was held in 1983 in memory of UCT star athlete Merrilyn Smith who died at age 22. In later years, the event also honoured the late Isavel Roche-Kelly and Lindsay Weight, former UCT distance runners who both won the Comrades Marathon twice.

More recently, the race previously known as the Women’s Memorial Run has morphed into the Memorial Run and now also commemorates the late and well-loved UCT runners Kevin Rochford and Andrzej Okreglicki. These five athletes are represented by the five stars under the Jameson steps on the race medal.

The 10km route starts on Middle Campus outside the Kramer building, winds through UCT’s campuses, Newlands and Rondebosch, and finishes just below the Groote Schuur/Woolsack Oval. Registration for the 07:00 start opens at 06:00 on race day. With an extended two-hour cut-off, fast walkers are also welcome to enter.

The 2017 recipient of the Lindsay Weight Memorial Scholarship Fund will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony after the race.

UCT’s sports administration has also appealed to the public to donate warm clothes and shoes for the Shoe Drop charity event. All donations go to SHAWCO’s Rags2Riches initiative, and can be dropped off at registration or the finish line.
