25 April 2019 | The UCT Executive

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the death of Ms Ashanti Mguga (32), a receptionist at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Fitness Centre. Ms Mguga died at Somerset Hospital on Sunday,14 April, after a long illness.

Ms Mguga joined UCT’s Sport and Recreation unit within the Department of Student Affairs in June 2008. Colleagues described her as lively, cheerful, kind-hearted and friendly in nature.

A memorial service in her honour was held on Wednesday, 24 April, at the Fitness Centre on UCT’s upper campus. Ms Mguga’s funeral will be held on Saturday, 27 April 2019, at a time and venue that will be confirmed at a later date.

She is survived by her mother, father and two daughters. The university is in contact with her family and has reached out to offer support and assistance during this time of grief.

We convey our heartfelt condolences to Ms Mguga’s family, friends and all who knew her.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive

The entire University of Cape Town community bids a final warm farewell to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Dr Max Price, whose term of office comes to an end on 30 June. It has been a remarkable and commendable decade at the helm for Dr Price. He has steadfastly led our institution through exceptionally complex times that have seen a sea change in South Africa’s higher education landscape. After 10 years of his leadership, we have much to celebrate at UCT and much to congratulate him for.
