Study finds high prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis aerosol release in Cape Town community
Since the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ) as the bacterial cause of tuberculosis (TB) in the late 1800s, it has generally been assumed that advanced disease and severe symptoms are prerequisites for airborne bacterial transmission between infected host and uninfected recipient.

Seabirds indicate little change in the amounts of plastic at sea since 1980s – UCT study
A new study by researchers at the University of Cape Town’s FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology shows that the amount of plastic in petrels breeding at Inaccessible Island in the central South Atlantic Ocean has remained constant since the 1980s. The findings of their study were published in the Science of The Total Environment journal.

Spiritual calling impacts a quarter of UCT students' academic experience – survey
Preliminary results from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Student Wellness Service (SWS) Indigenous Health Survey showed that 25% of the students sampled are undergoing an indigenous or African spiritual rite of passage that impacts their academic experience. They, and others, need appropriate support systems within a holistic UCT health and wellness framework that recognises diverse traditional medicine practices.

Researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) were part of a collaboration that has uncovered a link between an antiviral drug for COVID-19 infections called molnupiravir and a pattern of mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
