The annual Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) awareness walk took place in Cape Town on Saturday, 22 August. The event honoured the memory of the 19-year-old University of Cape Town (UCT) student who was raped and murdered by postal worker Luyanda Botha at the Clareinch Post Office in 2019. The message from Uyinene’s brother Esona on the day was to keep the conversation going. “It doesn’t have to be someone you know who is affected by GBV for you to speak out. Thank you to everyone who keeps trying,” he said.
