In remembrance: Xolile Samuel Funda

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague Mr Xolile Samuel Funda (64), who served as a cleaner in the Environmental & Geographical Science building on upper campus. He passed away on Monday, 10 August 2026.
Mr Funda joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in April 2001. He was known by his colleagues as a dedicated and hardworking man who took great pride in his work. Colleagues said his presence brought warmth to the workplace, and he was always happy to share jokes and make people laugh, especially with his familiar “Halala” chant. His colleagues said they will deeply miss his kindness and his readiness to lend a helping hand.
Mr Funda is survived by his wife Nomthandazo, daughters Nwabisa and Ncumisa, and grandchild Isakhanya.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, 19 August 2026 at the Baxter Theatre. He will be laid to rest on Saturday, 22 August 2026 in Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Funda family, and during this time of bereavement our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved our late colleague.
