When Mihlali Tom from Khulani Secondary School and Buhle Hoyose from Langa High School learnt from their science teachers that they had been selected for the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) MCBEngage Job Shadowing Programme, they couldn't wait to get started. Alongside fellow learners from neighbouring schools, they spent three days stepping beyond the classroom and into the laboratory, gaining hands-on experience in microbiology through DNA extraction, microscopy, biosafety laboratories and anatomy, while engaging with researchers, postgraduate students and scientists.
For Tom, the programme revealed that science extends far beyond health sciences and inspired him to pursue a future in scientific research, deepen his knowledge, and contribute to innovative solutions for society's challenges. For Hoyose, the experience offered a new perspective on the breadth of careers in science and what a future in research and innovation could look like. Through MCBEngage, programme founder Dr Sandiswa Mbewana hopes to create opportunities for more young people to see themselves in science by opening UCT's laboratories, connecting learners with researchers and industry, and making higher education feel both accessible and attainable.
