In remembrance: Shamiel Samuels

28 July 2026

Dear colleagues and students

It is with a deep sense of sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Shamiel Samuels (59), a transport operations manager. He passed away on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 due to natural causes.

Mr Samuels joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in July 2016. He has been described by his colleagues as a caring, kind and generous man, deeply devoted to his family. He will be remembered for always being willing to lend a helping hand. He found joy in the outdoors and had a passion for off-roading, fishing and camping.

Mr Samuels is survived by his wife Zainap; sons Mogamat Nur, Mogamat Shamieg, Abu Bakr, Mogamat Faldie; and grandchildren Mogamat Saeed, Shuaib, Salmaan and Muhammad Abdul Qaahir.

He was laid to rest on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 at Brodie Road Muslim Cemetery in Wynberg, Cape Town.

The university has reached out to offer support to Mr Samuels’ family, and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
