Dear colleagues and students
It is with heartfelt sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague Nandipha Sweetness Mhlom (51), who served as a food services assistant. She passed away on Friday, 15 May 2026 at Khayelitsha Hospital in Cape Town.
Mhlom joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in November 2016.
Her colleagues will remember her as someone who made them all better at what they do with her friendly demeanour. They regard her as a colleague who elevated their standards, but more importantly, who showed them how to always treat each other with kindness and respect. She cared deeply for the well-being of students and her colleagues. Colleagues said they will carry the lessons she taught them at work throughout their careers.
Mhlom is survived by her husband Bulelani; children Abongile, Zimkitha and Donager; and mother Busisiwe Ndzabela.
A memorial service in her honour was held at the Medical Residence Dining Hall, Faculty of Health Sciences on Thursday, 21 May 2026. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, 30 May 2026 at Zwart Water (Tabasa) in Komani (formerly Queenstown), Eastern Cape.
The university has offered its support to the Mhlom family and conveys its condolences to them and to all who knew and loved her.
Sincerely
The UCT Executive
