UCT International Office celebrates Africa Month

The University of Cape Town (UCT) International Office proudly hosted its annual Africa Month celebrations with the much-anticipated Africa Rising Talent Show, an evening that celebrated the richness of African culture, creativity, identity and emerging student talent. Held on campus during Africa Month, the event brought together students, staff, performers and supporters for a vibrant showcase of music, dance, theatre, poetry and storytelling from across the continent.

The evening opened with a powerful performance by the Roscommon Choir, whose moving harmonies immediately set the tone for a night filled with passion and excellence. Their performance created an atmosphere of unity and celebration, paving the way for a diverse line-up of talented student performers who took to the stage throughout the evening.

Delivering the opening remarks, Professor Thokozani Majozi, deputy vice-chancellor for Research and Internationalisation, reflected on Africa’s continued growth, resilience and innovation. He highlighted the importance of creating spaces where African excellence can be recognised and celebrated, particularly among young people whose creativity and talent continue to shape the future of the continent.

Professor Elelwani Ramugondo, deputy vice-chancellor for People, Culture and Society, also addressed attendees and spoke passionately about the significance of Africa Month as a celebration of identity, belonging and possibility. She praised the students for boldly sharing their gifts and talents, emphasising that Africa’s stories, cultures and creative expressions are central to shaping inclusive and transformative spaces within higher education and beyond.

Throughout the evening, audiences were treated to a variety of performances, which highlighted not only exceptional talent, but also the diversity and vibrancy of the African student community at UCT.

Recognition

The competition segment of the evening recognised several outstanding performers:

• First place: Aaliyah Linkov for a captivating monologue performance.
• Second place: Albert Dalindyebo Daniel Sibanda for an impressive singing performance.
• Third place: The Dancing Phoenix for an energetic and memorable dance performance.
• Overall winner: Lwazi Nkabinde for a singing performance that resonated strongly with both the audience and judges.
• Best Dressed winner: Zoe Mlendere Chilinkhwambe, who embodied the spirit and vibrancy of African fashion and culture.

The Africa Rising Talent Show continues to serve as an important platform for students to express themselves creatively, while fostering cultural appreciation, inclusion and connection across the university community. More than just a talent competition, the event stands as a celebration of Africa’s rising voices, diverse cultures and the extraordinary potential of its young people.
