Office of Research Integrity (ORI) biosafety and biosecurity workshop
The Office of Research Integrity invites staff and postgraduate students based in the biological and life sciences whose projects involve human participants, animals, human and/or animal biological samples, and potentially hazardous biological
agents such as human, animal or plant pathogens, toxins, recombinant or synthetic DNA/RNA to apply to attend a biosafety and security workshop.

Office for Postgraduate Studies and Researcher Development (OPGS) upcoming events
The OPGS offers workshops, seminars and information sessions to support and enhance the academic learning of UCT's postgraduate community. It strives to develop postgraduate students and fellows by teaching essential skills in areas of writing,
research ethics, self-management and supervision, to name a few.
These offerings are advertised on the OPGS workshop calendar. The semester 1 calendar will be published at the beginning of February. The OPGS also advertises on behalf of other
departments at UCT, such as Digital Library Services and the Libraries and Careers Service. Keep an eye out for what might be of interest to you and relevant to your academic journey.
Access UCT information required for proposals
Research Contracts & Innovation (RC&I) has migrated to a new website (same URL) and useful information that you may require for a proposal is available here.
You can find the UCT registration and identification numbers on various databases and platforms, tax numbers, banking details, the National Treasury central supplier database number as well as information on UCT's legal status and various
certificates that you may need to include in your submission.
Important update: UCT's subscription on the CrowdHelix platform
Please be informed that the University of Cape Town (UCT) has decided to cancel its subscription to the CrowdHelix platform.
We understand that this news may come as a disappointment to many of you who have been actively engaged in collaborative efforts through this platform.

Call for expressions of interest: u'GOOD research programme
The National Research Foundation (NRF), Fondation Botnar, and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) have partnered to implement a research programme on young people and relational wellbeing in urban and peri-urban environments. The u’GOOD
programme is structured into four thematic areas that act as entry points for investigations on the wellbeing of young people namely livelihoods, climate change, digitalisation and mental health.

Pre-announcement: NIHR Global Advanced Fellowships Round 1
Funder deadline: 11 July 2024
The NIHR Global Health Research portfolio funds applied health research in areas of unmet need for the direct and primary benefit of people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Recognising a gap in the global health funding landscape for
mid-career researchers, particularly for researchers employed in LMICs, the NIHR is launching a new Global Advanced Fellowship scheme.
The NIHR Global Advanced Fellowship awards support postdoctoral researchers in LMICs and the UK working in applied global health research. The Fellowship is aimed at individuals at various points of their career. The scheme is open to all health
(clinical or non-clinical), public health and social care research and methodology professions.
Funding amount and duration of funding: Up to £750,000 over 2 to 5 years.

University Equipment Committee (UEC) 2024 call for applications
The UEC has opened its annual call for research equipment grant applications. The UEC considers applications for strategic equipment items that are aligned with the research strategies of UCT, faculties and departments, and are not covered in the
conventional way by faculty equipment committees.
Please see the UEC call which lists the faculty contact persons for queries and includes a link to the application form. Category 2
applications (>R1.5 million) may be submitted as the National Research Foundation (NRF) National Equipment Programme call is expected to open in 2024. Further information will be communicated when the call opens.
Reminder of call for applications: Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Foreign,
Commonwealth and Development Office
UCT internal deadline: 8 March 2024
The Medical Research Council and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office invite applications for its African research leaders call. This supports global health research and the strengthening of research leadership across sub-Saharan Africa
(SSA). The aim to attract and retain rising star individuals who will lead high quality research on key global health issues pertinent to SSA. Researchers should be supported by an enthusiastic local research environment and by a UK-based partner as
part of a partnership between the African and UK institutions.

Reminder of call for applications: Wellcome Early-Career Awards – May 2024 round
UCT internal deadline: 11 March 2024
The Wellcome Early-Career Awards scheme is soliciting applications from early-career researchers from any discipline who are ready to develop their research identity. Through innovative projects, awardees will deliver shifts in understanding that
could improve human life, health, and wellbeing.
By the end of the award, successful candidates will be equipped to lead their own independent research programme. Research proposals may be in any discipline - including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), experimental
medicine, humanities and social science, clinical/allied health sciences, and public health - as long as it has the potential to improve human life, health and wellbeing, and aligns with the Wellcome Trust’s funding remit.
