UCT is a member of the South Africa Sweden University Forum (SASUF) which comprises 40 members universities from South Africa and Sweden. From 13-17 May 2024, SASUF will hold its annual Research and Innovation week in Sweden, hosted by three institutions: Malmö University, Lund University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Interested parties are invited to participate by hosting a satellite event, hosting a workshop session or participating in a poster session at the Sustainability Forum.

For any queries, contact Wilna Venter. The closing date is 17 November 2023.
Reminder: Update your eRA status following submission and review of your funding application

When your funding application receives a decision from a funder, please remember to update the status of your Application Stage Approval form in UCT’s eRA system. If a funding application is not successful, it can be easy to forget to update the eRA status to “Unsuccessful”. Updating the status ensures our reporting on UCT’s grant-seeking efforts is accurate.

The International Grants Hub is currently working to update eRA records with outdated statuses. They will contact relevant PIs directly with a request to update their eRA records. Thank you in advance for your help.
Reminder: eRA production system weekly downtime

Please note that the eRA production system will be unavailable every week between 16:00 on Wednesday evening and 08:30 on Thursday morning. Please ensure that you are completely logged out of the system before this time.

This is to ensure that the system resources are freed up for maintenance activities.

Final call for expressions of interest: UCT's Innovation Builder Fund (IBF)
Deadline: 25 September 2023

UCT's Innovation Builder Fund is now accepting new expressions of interest.

The IBF was launched in 2019 with the primary goal of nurturing and advancing UCT research projects that have demonstrated an initial proof of concept. The fund is designed to support projects that have been assessed as commercially viable and where research outputs have either been protected or have protectable intellectual property (IP).

This unique opportunity not only provides financial support, but also aids in maturing research outputs and mitigating associated risks, thereby preparing them for later-stage funding. Successful projects will receive a grant of up to R500 000 to aid in their development.

The IBF welcomes applications from researchers across all disciplines who are conducting innovative research with the potential for commercial application and IP protection.

Interested applicants should email the completed expression of interest form to Mpho Baisitse before the deadline of 25 September 2023.
Funding opportunity announcement: The Spencer Foundation RPP Grants Program
First internal deadline: 4 October 2023

The Spencer Foundation’s Research-Practice Partnership (RPP) Grants Programme is intended to support education research projects that engage in collaborative and participatory partnerships. Partnerships are viewed as an important approach to knowledge generation and the improvement of education. Over the long term, research conducted by RPPs should result in new insights into the processes, practices, and policies that improve education for learners, educators, families, communities, and institutions where learning and teaching happen (e.g., schools, universities, community centres, parks, museums, other workplaces).

Eligibility
  • Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs are expected to have a doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field or demonstrated professional experience appropriate for this programme.
  • PIs and Co-PIs may only hold one active research grant from the Spencer Foundation at a time.
Award details
  • Total budget is limited to $400 000.
  • Duration of up to three years.
See more details here.
Deadline extension: Call for proposals for the Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)
Compulsory intention to submit deadline: 29 September 2023

The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) for Social Sciences and Humanities has launched a call which aims to improve our knowledge and understanding of opportunities, challenges, and crises relevant to democracy, governance and trust (DGT).

Interdisciplinary and innovative research proposals along nine cross-cutting themes are invited. Researchers can apply as part of a transnational research project partnership that must include co-principal investigators (PIs) from at least three different T-AP participating countries. SA co-PIs must apply for co-funding from the NRF. Please see the call details and deadlines here. Queries can be directed to Robyn Udemans.
Reminder: Call for applications for UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards

The call for applications for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards is open. In the context of an unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external – particularly international – funders as well as multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary research collaborations. By allocating fractional funding based on grant submission without waiting for the successful outcome, seed funding is provided to enable immediate progress. Please see the call document which contains a link to the application form.

Queries can be directed to Robyn Udemans.

Research capacity building

Below are events, workshops and webinars that offer capacity-building opportunities for the UCT research community.

Upcoming Digital Scholar Series webinar
27 September 2023 from 13:00 to 14:00 (SAST)

The next Digital Scholar Series session on Wednesday 27 Sep at 13:00 focuses on maps. Sometimes you don't need a full blown spatial analysis, you just need to show where in the world you did your research.

In this session we will look at how to plot a few coordinates on a map to show your study area using the free and open source GIS package, QGIS. After this session you will know how to put your research on the map! Register here.

Upcoming Emerging Researcher Programme (ERP) event

The ERP is pleased to invite you to a webinar on intellectual property management and commercialisation at UCT. This session will provide insights into how intellectual property (IP) emanating from research activities is managed and commercialised at UCT. At the end of the session, researchers will have a firm understanding of intellectual property. The event will be held on 26 September 2023 from 13:00 to 14:00 (SAST). Register here.
