Call for applications: International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) early career collaboration grants

Deadline for applications: 1 June 2023

IARU, a network that comprises some of the world’s leading research-intensive universities (including UCT), has issued a call for applications for early-career collaboration grants.

This grants scheme has been created to increase opportunities for in-person global collaboration for early-career academics in the wake of the Covid pandemic. Researchers within 10 years of submitting their PhD (excluding postdocs), can apply for up to 5 000 USD to help meet the costs of a short-term research stay at another IARU university. Visits can take place any time between 1 October 2023 and 1 October 2024.

Applicants are asked to submit letters of support from their home university as well as the intended host institution along with their application form, and to detail plans for how their visit will help to foster additional collaboration between the two universities in the future.

Applications should be sent to the IARU secretariat by 1 June 2023. For full details, and the application form, please go here.
National Research Foundation (NRF) grants closing soon

The Research Office would like to remind academic staff that there are several NRF funding opportunities for 2023 which are closing in the next few months. These include a number of research grants as well as travel, training and conference grants. Potential applicants are urged to peruse the framework documents of the open calls for eligibility criteria, research focus areas and other details.

Open calls can be accessed on the UCT current funding opportunities page or directly on the NRF website. The NRF general application guide may be downloaded here.
Call for applications: Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) short research stays
3 April 2023

The DAAD German academic exchange service supports university teachers, established academics and scientists for short-term research stays of up to three months in Germany.

University teachers and established academics and scientists who have usually completed a doctoral degree and work at a university or research institute in their home country can apply.

The programme provides funding for research stays at state or state-recognised institutions of higher education or non-university research institutes in Germany. A research stay can also take place at several host institutions.
Funding may only be claimed once within three years. Lecture tours or visits to congresses are not funded.

More information may be found here.
Extended deadline for URC call for applications: short research visit/short research course grant

Reminder: Call for DHET creative research outputs submissions

The Research Office invites research staff to submit their 2020, 2021 and 2022 creative research outputs for submission to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This process results in the DHET awarding subsidies to UCT for creative research outputs in the following subfields: fine and visual arts; music, theatre, performance and dance; design; film and television; and literary arts.

More information, including guidelines, processes and resources can be found here.

Reminder of call for applications: UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards

The call for applications for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards is open. In the context of an unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external – particularly international – funders as well as multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary research collaborations. By allocating fractional funding based on grant submission without waiting for the successful outcome, seed funding is provided to enable immediate progress. Please see the call document which contains a link to the application form.
