Invitation to Ibali Indaba webinar: Locating Ibali in Digital Humanities
(DH)
15 March 2023 from 13:00 to 14:00 (SAST)
Join us for the second Ibali Indaba webinar of 2023, our monthly series that looks at the work being done on our Ibali UCT Digital Collections Site.
In this session we will aim to locate where Ibali fits within the wide world of Digital Humanities (DH). There are a myriad of definitions for the field of DH, that encompass a variety of levels of engagement between technology and the humanities.
We will take some time to look through these definitions and some case projects, before taking a closer look at some of the sites on Ibali which directly engage with, and contribute to, the field of DH.
Register here.

Reminder of call for applications: UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards
The call for applications for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence awards is open. In the context of an unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external –
particularly international – funders as well as multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary research collaborations. By allocating fractional funding based on grant submission without waiting for the successful outcome, seed funding is provided to enable
immediate progress. Please see the call document which contains a link to the application form.
Queries can be directed to Robyn Udemans.
Call for applications: 2023 International Initiative for Research on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
Notice of intent deadline (mandatory): 2 May 2023
The International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation is a collaboration of research funders to leverage international expertise to address the global challenges caused by climate change. The call aims to
further the design and implementation of co-produced adaptation and mitigation strategies for vulnerable groups. It will provide support for collaborative multilateral research and capacity building projects that are interdisciplinary,
trans-sectoral, participatory, and contextually- and culturally-appropriate mitigation and adaptation responses to at least two of the eight key risks of climate change highlighted in the Sixth
Assessment Report of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Please see the National Research Foundation (NRF) call document for the SA funding
eligibility criteria and regulations. Applicants must submit their notice of intent (mandatory) directly to the call secretariat by Tuesday, 2 May 2023, 20:00 (Eastern Time). Full proposals must be submitted by 28 August 2023 for internal
review.

Reminder: Call for DHET creative research outputs submissions
The Research Office invites research staff to submit their 2020, 2021 and 2022 creative research outputs for submission to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This process results in the DHET awarding subsidies to UCT for
creative research outputs in the following subfields: fine and visual arts; music, theatre, performance and dance; design; film and television; and literary arts.
More information, including guidelines, processes and resources can be found here.
Call for applications: SAMRC Research Grants (Early Career and Research Grants) Program
In January 2023, South Africa was admitted as a member of the International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) following a competitive application process. The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and
the National Research Foundation (NRF) serve as joint institutional members. South Africa is the 16th country to be admitted, and the only country from Africa. HFSP research grants support innovative basic research into fundamental biological
problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries.
Participation of scientists from disciplines outside the traditional life sciences such as biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nanoscience, or physics is recommended because such collaborations
have opened up new approaches for understanding the complex structures and regulatory networks that characterise living organisms, their evolution, and interactions.
More details regarding deadlines, eligibility and the application process may be found here.
