National Research Foundation (NRF) evaluation and rating 2023: pre-call announcement

The 2023 NRF Call for submission of applications for evaluation and rating is expected to open over the next few weeks.

UCT regards the rating system as an important means of benchmarking and your participation in this process is crucial to ensuring our success as a transforming research-intensive institution. In preparation for this call, we are issuing this notice to all re-evaluants and prospective new applicants, to encourage applicants to start updating or creating their research profiles on the NRF’s new online system. 

The following presentations will be of great benefit to re-evaluants and new applicants.
 
Presentation by Professor Robert Morrell
In this workshop Prof Robert Morrell will describe how the rating system works, what its demands are and how one might go about engaging with the application process. Prof Morrell has been NRF B-Rated for nearly 20 years and was heavily involved in the rating system as a convenor of the Education Specialist Rating committee, a rating assessor and a member of the Rating Appeals committee.

Presentation by the Libraries Bibliometrics Working Group
A workshop will be hosted by the Libraries Bibliometrics Working Group to assist researchers with providing the relevant evidence required in the narrative section of the rating application. This will highlight productivity, research excellence, collaborations and research impact (both academic and societal).

Update: Obtaining Section 20 permits from DALRRD (Department of Land Reform and Rural Development)

Dr Lyn Horn and Mr Werner van der Ross from the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) met with veterinarians in the Animal Diseases Section 20 permit division of DALRRD on September 26 in an attempt to clarify some of the recent requests from DALRRD relating to Section 20 applications.

Call for nominations and applications: UCT Social Responsiveness Award for 2022
Nomination deadline: Friday, 4 November 2022

UCT now invites nominations and applications for the Distinguished Social Responsiveness Award 2022. This award, to the value of ZAR35 000, recognises staff who play an active development role in our cultural, economic, political, scientific, and social environment.

Social responsiveness is core to the work of UCT as an engaged institution and is achieved through our core work of teaching, research, and service to society. Recipients can be academic, professional, administrative or service departments, and can be individuals or groups. All staff and students are eligible to apply or be nominated.

Deadline extension for nominations: South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Scientific Merit Awards
Deadline: 14 October 2022

Please note the deadline for nominations for the SAMRC Scientific Merit Awards has been extended until the 14th October 2022.
 
The awards are in recognition of the best scientific minds and contributions within health research – whose work reflect innovative methods and novel approaches to public health concerns, to potentially impact on policy and subsequently to the betterment of the lives of South Africans.
 
Qualifying candidates are individual researchers who have, through published work, made groundbreaking contributions to impactful world-class science and health research aimed at advancing the lives of South Africans.

Reminder: UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence Awards
Friday, 11 November 2022 deadline for external-to-UCT funding applications submitted between 01 January 2022 and 31 October 2022

This is a reminder to the research community of the open call for applications for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence Awards. In the context of an unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external – particularly international – funders, as well as multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary research collaborations. Two additional eligibility categories have been introduced, as well as a second deadline. Please see the call document and details on how to apply here.

URC call for applications: Hosting a conference grant
Deadline: 31 October 2022

Applications are invited for the URC's hosting a conference grant. The primary aim of this grant is to assist departments in arranging research conferences and symposia with seed funding to initiate conference arrangements.

The focus is on providing support for smaller research conferences that otherwise would not take place without this seed funding. This grant is not intended for research development workshops or for large regular international conferences or national society annual conferences.

NRF call for proposals: Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP)

Proposals for small, strategic projects that address critical gaps relevant to foundational biodiversity information and knowledge are invited. 
 
The aim of the programme is to fund the generation, mobilisation and integration of priority foundational biodiversity knowledge and information so that this can be managed, secured and disseminated to address the needs of society, the Department of Science & Innovation (DSI) Global Change Programme and the bio-economy.
