Noticeboard

On the Research Announcement noticeboard, we share news and items of interest from the UCT Research Office.

Updates to eRA: Live as of 05 May 2022

Following the DVC Desk that was published on 24 March, the eRA pre-awards module has been updated with a new feature called the Person Effort functionality which will be rolled out on 05 May 2022.

As of today, you will need to enter all UCT project staff listed on your grant proposal under selected roles in your eRA approval form, and finance staff will need to capture the percent effort (which reflects the amount of time that will be committed to the project) for all UCT individuals listed on each grant application. This eRA update is necessary to facilitate compliance with funder requirements on effort reporting.

If you need help or have any questions, please log a call via ServiceNow.

Research Contracts and Innovation (RC&I) invites post-graduate students (masters or PhD) or academic staff from UCT who are interested in commercialising their research to sign up for UCT’s Idea to Impact (i2!) programme.

The i2! programme will equip researchers with the skillset and experience required to commercialise their research either via licensing, or creating a high-growth technology company. Participants will gain valuable experience and exposure to the technology transfer industry and start-ups.

The programme consists of six weeks of training to provide attendees with the tools necessary to commercialise research.

You can download the invitation here. For more details, please email RC&I’s New Venture Support Manager, Niall Naidoo or register here.

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced a call for concept notes under the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) initiative.

CLARE is an ambitious initiative supporting research to enable socially inclusive and sustainable action to build resilience to climate change and natural hazards across Africa and Asia-Pacific. Given the scale and urgency required, in addition to generating research, CLARE will place significant emphasis on getting knowledge and evidence into use. CLARE will deliver strengthened agency in the Global South to do and use research for adaptation action, as well as actionable adaptation solutions to support the most vulnerable.

This call for concept notes seeks to identify transdisciplinary teams motivated to conduct action-oriented research related to one (or more) of CLARE’s three research themes, namely:
  • Understand climate risk
  • Risk-informed early action
  • Developing in a changing climate

United Kingdom Research and Innovation's (UKRI) applied global health research board supports applied research that will be of direct and primary benefit to the health of vulnerable populations. They are looking for research projects that will develop practical solutions to health challenges. The research question might involve different disciplines and approaches from outside the health sector, but the primary objective must be health focused.

The following grant schemes are available through the applied global health research board:
  • research grant: MRC research grants are suitable for focused research projects that may be short- or long-term in nature. In addition, they can be used to support method development or development and continuation of research facilities and may involve more than one research group or institution.
  • partnership grant: The partnership grant scheme is designed to support novel partnerships between diverse groupings of researchers. Funding will be provided to establish new, high-value collaborative activities or capabilities that should add value to high-quality scientific programmes that are already supported by grants from the MRC and other funders. It is not designed to fund standalone, hypothesis-driven research projects, which may otherwise be eligible for MRC research or programme grant type funding.

POPIA information session for researchers
12 May 2022

Researchers, principal investigators, study leaders and members of research ethics committees are invited to attend UCT's POPIA information session for researchers.

POPIA has implications for all research involving human research participants. POPIA is not a threat to research activities, because it balances the right to privacy against the
public interest in research activities. However, research activities must be assessed to make sure that the impact on research participants is properly managed by researchers.

During this session the latest news regarding ASSAf's POPIA Code of Conduct will also be shared.
